At times of emergency the Armed Forces Emergency Service (AFES) provides the crucial communication link between Armed Forces personnel throughout the world and their family. Your American Red Cross Martin County Chapter maintains a connection to a Department of Defense satellite communications network which operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Red Cross can contact a member of the Armed Forces anywhere in the world within five minutes to alert them of the death of serious illness of a family member, the brith of a child, or other family emergencies.

International Services

The American Red Cross has a long history of providing service to America's military in times of war. Beginning in the mid-1800s the organization's founder, Clara Barton, risked her life on the battlefields of the Civil War to tend to fallen soldiers. Clara Barton later led a contingent of nurses to Cuba during the Spanish-American War of 1898. Their heroic service prompted a Congressional Charter requiring the American Red Cross to conduct emergency communication services for armed forces personnel.

The Red Cross also expedites information to help make decisions regarding emergency leaves. The Red Cross collaborates with the various military aid societies in providing financial assistance when an urgent personal or family crisis arises.

American Red Cross Armed Forces Emergency Services personnel serve in nearly 1,000 chapters in the United States, on 109 military installations around the world and alongside our troops in Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Kosovo and Afghanistan.

America's Military and The American Red Cross Partnership.

Today, when United States military personnel are deployed anywhere in the world, Red Cross workers are there as well providing emergency messages and a caring presence to service men and women separated from their families. Martin County Chapter volunteers are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide help. Our volunteers are trained interviewers who are kept current in all military policies and procedures. If you would like to become a volunteer for our Armed Forces Emergency Services please contact us today!

The American Red Cross has a unique mandate to educate the American public about the guiding principles and international humanitarian law (IHL) framework for conduct in warfare as set forth by the Geneva Conventions of 1949. International humanitarian law is the branch of international law that encompasses both humanitarian principles and international treaties that seek to save lives and alleviate suffering of both combatants and noncombatants during armed conflicts.

International Humanitarian Law Classes Courses on the Geneva Conventions, the Fundamental Principles, and international humanitarian law are offered by American Red Cross chapters. To take a class, please contact the American Red Cross Martin County Chapter.
